I don’t say this lightly, but this Silent Hill-inspired Steam Next Fest survival horror is giving Bloober Team’s remake a serious run for its money

With Bloober Team’s brilliant Silent Hill 2 Remake finally out, I’ve basically been playing nothing else. As hopelessly bleak as it is, the vibes are simply immaculate in the runup to Halloween, and unlike the original, the gameplay and combat are actually satisfying instead of frustrating. However, there’s a new survival horror game in town giving Silent Hill 2 Remake a serious run for its money: Heartworm, an indie game I’ve had my eyes (and hands) on for more than four years.I first played Heartworm when its first demo launched as part of the retro-styled Haunted PS1 Demo Disc 2020, and I remember feeling really good about the atmosphere and overall direction, but also apprehensive about whether it could do justice to the late 90s/early 2000s classics it’s so clearly inspired by. I no longer have those concerns after playing the brand new Heartworm demo as part of Steam Next Fest. Not even a little bit.Actually, this latest version is one of the most moody, clever, and yes, genuinel…

Epic is already planning Unreal Engine 6, combining “high-end” dev tools with Fortnite’s simpler creative mode editor and enabling “persistent universe” games

Epic Games is already working towards Unreal Engine 6 – the next big iteration of its game creation toolkit – which is expected to be “several years” away.In an interview with The Verge, Epic’s CEO, Tim Sweeney, refers to the power of the company’s “high-end” engine, but also the “ease of use” of Unreal Editor for Fortnite (simplified tools players can use to make creative mode maps in the hit battle royale). He explains: “The real power will come when we bring these two worlds together so we have the entire power of our high-end game engine merged with the ease of use that we put together in [Unreal Editor for Fortnite]. That’s going to take several years. And when that process is complete, that will be Unreal Engine 6.”Sweeney explains that the idea for Unreal Engine 6 is that devs can simply “build an app once” and then be able to roll it out “as a standalone game for any platform,” with the option to put their work into any game that also chooses to “use this technology…

A year after WWE superstar Bray Wyatt’s untimely death, his “final creation” is finally getting the spotlight it deserves in WWE 2K24

WWE superstar Windham Rotunda – better known by his in-ring name Bray Wyatt – died in 2023 from a heart attack, the result of an existing condition that had been exacerbated by a COVID-19 infection. He was only 36, and the sudden death of a beloved performer hit the wrestling world hard at the time. Now, just over a year later, WWE 2K24 is paying tribute to Bray by recreating the character he never got the opportunity to bring to the ring. After Rotunda’s death, the Bray Wyatt: Becoming Immortal documentary gave us a look at what would have been the next iteration of his Fiend character. Makeup effects artist Jason Baker revealed that he and Rotunda had been collaborating on a new iteration of the Fiend costume that was effectively complete, including a creepy lantern shaped like the character’s mask, complete with animatronic eyes.On the October 4 edition of Smackdown, a brief teaser trailer for a WWE 2K24 update debuted, showing this new version of the Fiend, which had never previousl…

Retro Gamer celebrates Namco’s Ridge Racer series

It has been 30 years since Ridge Racer first hit the PlayStation, and Retro Gamer is looking back at the franchise’s impressive back catalog of games. The original arcade hit debuted in 1993, convincing Jerry Momoda to join the company. “I was teased with an early look at Ridge Racer, and I was so impressed,” he recalls. “It was state-of-the-art 3D that included texture mapping and Gouraud shading – and all this at 60fps.”Famed for its distinct location and bright visuals, Jerry mentions that Ridge Racer’s look was partly due to Namco’s president at the time. “The chairman and founder of Namco, Mr Nakayama, was really into movies and the film industry, and back in the day Namco owned a movie studio,” he explains. “I think this passion influenced the look and feel of Namco’s games. Ridge Racer’s setting was fictitious. It was partially based on driving in mountainous areas, which was popular at that time in Ja…

The Metal Gear Solid 3 remake is “already playable” from start to finish, so the release date is “not going to be years and years” away

We’ve gotten a few new details on the Metal Gear Solid 3 remake – or Metal Gear Solid Delta, if you prefer the official title – as part of Konami’s latest Production Hotline broadcast. While the devs aren’t willing to commit to a release date just yet, they did address fan questions about when the remake is finally going to launch.”Unfortunately, we’re still not able to name a date just quite yet,” production producer Noriaki Okamura says. “We’re working very hard on the development, I promise, but we’re just not yet at the stage where we can say with confidence exactly when it will be out. I can tell you that, from start to finish, the whole game is already playable, so we know it’s not going to be years and years. Nothing like that, I’m pretty sure.”

After Patch 7, Baldur’s Gate 3 player finds new “impossible” evil ending that Larian cut from the RPG, where your Tav gets sick of it all and “peaces out” at the big finale

Baldur’s Gate 3’s seventh major update is here – bringing with it a monstrous 18,000 words worth of patch notes – and one player has just discovered a new fiendish ending that proves the age-old adage about apathy being one of the truest forms of evil.I always love when an RPG lets players loose to be a little more than mischievous, and Baldur’s Gate 3 was happy to oblige throughout its mammoth campaign. Developer Larian Studios has now given evil-doers some new finales to wrap up their hours spent being mean and nasty. One of the scrapped endings that came with the seventh patch has actually been fully animated and left hidden in the game’s files, unreachable in normal runs due to the recurring “impossible” tag blocking it off. It isn’t so plainly evil, though – your character simply decides that they kind of can’t be bothered to finish the fight, right before they’re about to subjugate innocents to the Absolute’s power. YouTuber SlimX discovered the “impossible” ending, and you can se…
